Hard or soft?
Confusingly there are two different kinds of water hardness, both
caused by calcium and magnesium salts. The first, found in most water,
is known as permanent hardness and is caused by the calcium and
magnesium salts of chloride and sulphate. They give water its
characteristic taste but do not cause scale deposits when the water is
heated.
The second type of hardness is called temporary hardness and is caused
by calcium and magnesium bicarbonate. Calcium and magnesium bicarbonate
are destroyed by boiling and therefore this is sometimes referred to as
"temporary hardness". Boiling changes it to insoluble carbonate, which
is the deposit we know as scale. This fixes to surfaces such as heating
elements and boiler walls. It also causes that murky, scummy appearance
in tea and coffee.
Does the removal of temporary hardness affect calcium levels?
Yes, but mostly in the form of temporary hardness or limescale which is
not a good source of dietary calcium. This will not have a significant
effect on the calcium intake of those on a normal diet.
Has filtered water any additional advantages?
The BRITA water filter cartridge reduces chlorine and chlorine
compounds as well as other undesirable flavours that may be present in
tap water. Heavy metals in tap water, such as lead and copper that can
be caused by household plumbing pipes, are also reduced. The
elimination of lead and copper in tap water is desirable to protect
human health. The claim of the BRITA water filter cartridge to reduce
copper and lead significantly has been substantiated in numerous tests.
Regionally related traces of pesticides and aluminium in drinking water
can also be minimised by the use of the BRITA water filter cartridges.
Is filtered water the same as distilled water?
A Brita water filter removes substances from tap water which can affect
the taste and appearance, it is therefore only partially
de-mineralised. Distilled water is totally de-mineralised and therefore
filtered water cannot be used where distilled water is required, e.g.
car batteries.

1. Teksten siger intet om effektiviteten af filteret. Så længe
kvantiteter ikke berøres gælder det skrevne osse for et kaffefilter.
2. Du kan ikke lave et filter til at rense hårdhedsgrader fra 5-30 uden
at undgå demineraliseret vand. Man skal måle på vandet og kalibrere
metoden hvis man eksempelvis vil opretholde en hårdhed over 5.
Dermed, hvis brita filteret var effektivt kunne man ikke afsige at det
producerede demineralisret vand.
3. Der findes ikke teknologi til at blødgøre/demineralisere vand ved
blot hurtigt at hælde det igennem et filter. Såfremt det var muligt
ville det ikke blot være et tvivlsomt produkt henvendt til helsefreak
alternatikere. Producenterne ville være milliardærer der solgte udstyr
til kemiske laboratier, vandforsyningstjenester og f.eks. akvarister.
Akvarister er iøvrigt et godt eksempel; det bringer tingene ned i et
perspektiv i øejnhøjde. Hvordan kan det være at akvariefolk der vil have
blødgjort deres vand til f.eks. 15 dH bruger 2000+ kr for en osmotisk
pumpe der kan producere i omegnen af 1 L vand i timen, koster en
helvedes bunke strøm, fylder og larmer samt tager 24 timers beslag på
vandhanen, når man med et filter til en brøkdel af prisen blot kan hælde
litervis af vand lige igennem filteret?
Kort sagt kanden kan kun bruges i situationer hvor performance måles på
baggrund af tro. Situationer hvor filterets utilstrækkelighed vil være
til at tage og føle på vil du ikke se det anvendt.
